OpenAI releases 722 math papers from frontier model, claims progress on Riemann Hypothesis and Millennium problems

OpenAI published 722 mathematical manuscripts grouped into 372 families of related results from an internal frontier model via GitHub repo, blogpost, and tweet. The collection came from evaluation of ~4,000 research problems using an average of three hours of ChatGPT Pro thinking compute per result. The release includes papers, proof artifacts, and selected reasoning summaries; the model itself remains unreleased. Results reportedly include partial progress on Riemann, Hodge, and BSD conjectures, with 20% of results being disproofs or counterexamples. Mathematician Levent Alpöge praised the quasi-Riemann and no-Siegel-zeros results, calling it "the most significant moment in mathematical history," though he noted reported scooping and conflict-of-interest problems involving other labs' users.

Reflection Beam: 501B/23B MoE open model trained from scratch in US with 23.8T tokens

Reflection announced Beam, a 501B-total/23B-active mixture-of-experts model trained from scratch on 23.8T pretraining tokens (including OCR pipeline over hundreds of millions of PDFs) and RL/OPD on 10K GB300s with 100M+ rollouts across ~1M tasks. Full weights under Apache 2.0 due this month. Claimed results: 80.9 on SWE-bench Verified, 3–4x inference efficiency vs. GLM 5.2, four weeks each of pretraining and RL on ~10,500 GB300s. Axios reported Reflection pays $150M/month for Colossus compute plus a $1B Nebius deal. Independent analysis: Artificial Analysis expects Beam among most token-efficient open models for its intelligence; Elie Bakouch estimates ~12% BF16 MFU in pretraining with 3:1 interleaved global/sliding-window attention and better held-out code perplexity than DeepSeek V3; Teortaxes calls it iso-FLOP replication of DeepSeek V3 with ~1.3B RL sandboxes over 4 weeks, up to 170K running concurrently. Observers place Beam around GLM-5.2 level, below DeepSeek V4 Flash on some benchmarks.

Mistral Large 4 preview: 1T total / 49B active parameters, multimodal, $1.13 per task

Mistral Large 4 ("Le Chonk") preview features 1T total parameters with 49B active, is natively multimodal, and is available via API now with open weights promised for end of October. On Artificial Analysis, it scores 38 on the Intelligence Index (level with GPT-6 Luna max and top score from outside US/China), 50 on the Cyber Index, and 82% on CyberGym-E2E-AA. Cost is $1.13 per task, over 4x that of similar-intelligence open models. The cyber lead is attributed largely to fewer refusals—Opus 5.5 and Astra had about 40% of tasks blocked by their own safety filters.

Decision models emerge as specialized alternative to text generation: Perplexity, Command Code, TypeSafe releases

Perplexity released pplx-decider-v1.1-27b as open weights at $0.02/M input, topping the new Hugging Face Decision Index v0.3. Independent evaluation by Vals found Jev matched GPT-6 Astra's 97.5% on claim verification at about 1/500th the cost, though Jev ranked last on LegalBench. Command Code released Agr (31B) and Agr-flash (360M), decision models that skip text generation and return typed values with per-option probabilities for tool calls and routing. The state of the tech industry in 2026: keynote summary from Gergely Orosz

Gergely Orosz delivered a 29-minute keynote at LDX3 engineering leadership conference (2,000+ attendees) covering a snapshot of the tech industry after visiting AI labs (OpenAI, Anthropic), startups (Ramp, Uber), and gathering unpublished data from GitHub, Factory AI, and Linear. The talk identifies 12 major changes, areas that remain broken, what stays the same, and what comes next. Key changes include: (1) AI-assisted coding is now mainstream—most engineers have stopped writing code by hand since end of 2025; (2) productive engineers now run several parallel agents simultaneously; (3) agent-generated PRs exceeded human-authored ones on GitHub in August 2026, with ~75M+ fully AI-generated PRs per month by October 2025 vs. 25M human-generated in December 2023; (4) agents are opening tickets at scale (Linear data); (5) agent skills repositories are mainstream across companies; (6) IDEs are fading as engineers move to AI-centric workflows; (7) mid-sized and larger companies have built custom AI harnesses; (8) development increasingly starts in Slack integrations with coding agents; (9) agentic software factories are being built across the industry; (10) migrations that took years now take weeks or months; (11) AI costs are a major concern, with companies switching to open models to save 50%+ in token costs (Uber kept costs flat despite rising token usage); (12) projects complete with only one or two engineers. Broken areas include: exponential growth in code quantity and commits breaking assumptions; code reviews are now theater—engineers cannot review 5-10x more code; quality and reliability are declining with more AI usage; GPU, memory, and CPU shortages; and engineering leaders taking unexpected career breaks. What remains unchanged: teams are still critical; complex work still requires planning; testing and validation are essential; non-engineers still don't ship to production; and old best practices (unit tests, tracer bullets, design patterns) guide agents effectively. Future trends: cloud-based coding agents will dominate over local ones; engineers will stop reading agent-generated code; companies will rebuild internal infrastructure for agents; a golden age of refactoring and tech debt cleanup; AI fluency becomes a hiring criterion at startups; domain expertise becomes more valuable; and the pace of change will remain exhausting.
